Calibration is a fundamental requirement in regulated industries, where measurement uncertainty directly affects product quality, process control and compliance.

Across parameters such as conductivity, pressure, mass, and flow reliable calibration ensures confidence in measurement results and supports documented decision-making.

This knowledge section brings together calibration principles, challenges and best practices across different measurement types — helping you understand how calibration strategies support reliable and compliant production.

Why Should I Calibrate?

Calibration ensures consistent product quality, meets regulatory requirements, and reduces the risk of non-compliance. With calibrated equipment, you can operate closer to specification limits, minimize errors, and reduce waste—saving both materials and costs.

Is Calibration Just a Necessary Evil?

For most, calibration is a necessary evil and a recurring cost - a piece of paper you need to have on your equipment that documents and supports customer requirements, regulatory obligations, internal standards, quality systems, and periodic maintenance. But is that really all calibration is?

Calibration Definition - What is calibration?

Calibration is the process by which, equipment is tested on its ability to measure correctly by comparing it to a reference standard.

The reference standard must itself be traceable to nationally or internationally agreed standards to ensure reliable and comparable results. For this reason, traceability and documented calibration methods are essential elements of a credible calibration process.

It is also important to note that calibration is not the act of adjusting the equipment, only the act of testing whether it is measuring correctly. If the equipment needs adjusting, there must be a calibration before adjustment and another calibration after adjustment to make sure it is measuring within the accepted parameters, i.e. maximal permissible error.
